Playscape Calendar & Events Fall 2020
Dear Mother Mentor Families,
We wanted to update families about our fall programs. In determining what we could safely offer, we gathered information from organizations we share space with, contacted the Parks Department about outdoor options, reviewed input from the family survey, talked with other Play and Learn groups and reviewed current state recommendations.
Although we had hoped to meet face to face starting in September, we have determined it is not yet safe for us to do so. Even outdoor gatherings are not a viable option right now due to the size limitation of only ten people (adults and children).
We know how important it continues to be for caregivers and children to build community and find support with one another so instead of canceling all programs for the year, we put together an alternate plan until we can safely meet in person.
Starting the week of September 14th we will be offering the following:
Exploring Circles with Teresa on Mondays at 9:30 a.m.
Although these are done live on Facebook, we save the videos so you may watch whenever it is convenient for your family. We sing songs, read stories, explore letters, colors, shapes, nature and much more. These last about fifteen minutes.
Zoom Kid’s Corner on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m.
Teresa will have games and activities to share, but what is most important is that those kids who want to see their friends from Playscape can do so. We may sing, play a game, do show-and-tell or talk with each other. While on Zoom, kids are free to come and go as their attention span allows. We will meet for fifteen minutes then add time if needed.
Stories and Crafts with Couloir on Fridays at 9:30 a.m.
Couloir combines children’s literature, crafts and activities which can be done at home. Often her son and special helper Gracen makes a cameo appearance.
Monthly Creation Station Pick-Up:
There was an overwhelming response on the survey for children’s crafts. We are excited to offer monthly craft kits available for pick up one day a month. We will have individual batches of playdough, small containers of paint and glue, craft items and a fun surprise. The donation jar will be out for those able to donate towards the cost of the materials. All adults must wear a mask when picking up supplies and we encourage older children to as well.
Here’s September’s pick up date and time:
Wednesday, Sept 16th from 10:30-12:30 at Whidbey Presbyterian Church in Oak Harbor.
Friday, Sept 18th from 10:30-12:30 at Playscape South on Maxwelton Road.
Toy and Book Exchange:
The idea for a book and toy exchange came from one of our parents. If you have any gently used books or toys to donate, bring them to the September Creation Station pick-up. We will sanitize them and make them available at the October pick-up. Toys and books dropped off in October will be made available for pick-up in November.
Caregivers let us know which parenting topics they are most interested in learning about. Each month we will pick one topic to share articles, videos, pose questions or surveys so we can continue to learn and support one another.
We invite you to use our page to connect with one another, to ask for help, offer tips and suggestions. In addition to Mother Mentors Facebook group there are other local groups you may consider joining such as South Whidbey Moms and Dads, Moms of South Whidbey and on the north end, Whidbey Island Wives and Spouses. If there are other groups, please let us know so we can share those as well.
Instead of filling out the yearly form, we will be gathering information electronically. Thank you for taking the time to send that information back to us. If you know other families who may benefit from our program, please spread the word.
We are committed to continuing our work with families with young children. We are flexible and will look at changing our programs when it is safe to do so.
